Weaving and mixed material:

West coast Salish weavers and Cowichan Knitters:

Working with wool, whether it is weaving, knitting, crocheting, spinning, or felting, is a practice that has a long-lived and international reach.

Here, the Coast Salish have a vibrant spinning and weaving tradition (show currently on at the Morris and Helen Belkin Gallery until Dec 2, 2018). Historically, the Salish bred and kept the Comox breed dog, or Salish Wool dog, to harvest their wool for weaving.

Today, Musqueam and other Coastal Salish weavers, produce internationally priced weavings. http://moa.ubc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Sourcebooks-Weavers.pdf

Cowichan Knitting is also both historic and very much in production today. The Cowichan are from southern Vancouver Island, and are well known world-wide for their distinctive knitted patterns in sweaters. To hear directly from Cowichan Knitter Mary Ellen Joe – see-   https://youtu.be/si4GdIe-zJY
