Nalbinding -Nålebinding – Naalbinding

Nålebinding (think Nail + Binding, like binding your fingernail but it is apparently Danish for binding with a needle). (reference 1 : https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/ojoa.12141

This is the older – and cooler cousin to crochet and knitting. It is durable and will not run if it is snagged! Though many folks have never heard of this manner of working wool, Scandinavians never forgot. I love learning new things, especially about textiles, so this year, after visiting with my wool-wizardly sister,  decided to learn this ancient craft.  I am hooked!

There are a variety of stitch types, but many are based on Oslo ( named after where an early artifact was unearthed). The cool think about this stitch is that it is made with wool, and a continuous thread – about 2m at a time. One breaks the yarn by pulling it apart and then after you run out of length, you felt (wet- felt/ and twist) the next length to your existing working yarn. So have a cup of water on hand while working to dip your fingers into when working in a new piece of yarn.

Some of the ‘how’ to videos I have seen are far more complicated than the task actually is, and the ones that get right to the point are not in English. So, my sister quickly made me a 48 second video to show me how to get started. I hope she’ll let me share with you:-) stay posted.
